Vasily Lanovoy born in Moscow, where his parents moved from Odessa region. He spent the them of war in his native village of Strymba.

Vasily immediately chose a creative profession. He went to study at the Moscow State University at the Faculty of Journalism. He studied there for a short time, and later entered the Shchukin Theater School, which he graduated in 1957.
